Estély Violetta Valéry szalonjában. Nagyvilági társaság: D'Obigny márki, Grenvil doktor, Douphol báró, Flora Bervoix, Gaston és mások. Gaston magával hozta barátját, a fiatal Alfred Germont-t, hogy végre bemutassa a ház úrnõjének titkos rajongóját. Bordal a szépségre és az igazi szerelemre - bordal a pezsdülõ, elrohanó élet röppenõ élvezeteire. Violetta múló rosszulléte zavarja meg a mulatságot; köhögõroham: a lappangó tüdõbetegség áruló jele. Néhány percre, amíg magához tér, más szobákba vonulnak át a vendégek. Alfréd tart ki mellette, részvevõ aggodalommal. Violettának tetszik a fiatalember - de menekülni próbál még a mélyebb érzéstõl: nagyvilági függetlenségét félti; a felületesség védõpáncéljával próbál védekezni a szerelem kiszolgáltatottsága ellen...
