Maude különc, szabadszájú és harsány nő, Lionel pedig kifogástalan modorú, művelt és meglehetősen cinikus férfi. Ők ketten talán soha nem találkoztak volna, hiszen Maude munkanélküli pincérnőként egy lepukkant lakókocsiparkban él Kaliforniában, Lionel pedig egy neves művészeti alapítványnál dolgozik a kontinens másik felén, New Yorkban. Csakhogy Maude-nak van egy féltve őrzött kincse: egy szerinte milliókat érő Jackson Pollock festmény, aminek a valódiságáról szeretne hiteles szakértői véleményt kapni, és most Lionelre vár a feladat, hogy megállapítsa, Maude festménye valódi-e vagy csak hamisítvány. Azonban találkozó, vagyis a hivatalos értékbecslés nem úgy sül el, ahogy normálisan számítanánk rá: és nemcsak a képről, de szinte minden másról is kiderül, hogy nem az, aminek elsőre látszik...
