Az 1988/89-es évadban újították fel az Erkel Színházban Gounod közel 80 éven keresztül pihentetett dalművét, a Rómeó és Júliát. Szűcs Márta után a „második Júlia” a rendező Gulyás Dénes partnereként – szokatlan módon – egy zeneakadémiai növendék, Rost Andrea volt. A bemutatkozást hatalmas siker követte, ám igen gyorsan az is világossá vált, hogy a rendszerváltozás után már szinte képtelenség egy ilyen tehetséget az OPERÁ-hoz kötni. Rost útja a Bécsi Staatsoperbe vezetett, ahol néhány apróbb szerepet követően az együttes egyik oszlopa lett. Bécs után London, Milánó és New York operaházainak kapui is szélesre tárultak a magyar szoprán előtt. Rost Andrea az elmúlt másfél évtizedben ismét szorosabbra fűzte a művészi köteléket Magyarországgal és az OPERÁ-val. A koloratúr repertoárt fokozatosan maga mögött hagyva, sikeresen debütált Verdi- Puccini- és Leoncavallo-szerepekben is.

The World of Ballet Remembers a Hungarian Legend 2014 saw the sudden passing of the international ballet artist and ballet director Iván Nagy. After his retirement, he had returned to serve his country by working as head artistic consultant for the Hungarian State Opera.
Set in the Roman Empire around 74 BC, Spartacus was László Seregi's first true full-length ballet, which at one stroke became a milestone in Hungarian dance life. Since 1968, one generation after another has enjoyed the historically themed choreography, which treats the story of the ancient slave revolt in such a way that its true message is not the rebellion itself, but rather human emotions and choices under pressure.
A century ago, the world first encountered this remarkable opus, a work that soon became one of the cornerstones of twentieth-century musical innovation. Premiered in 1926, the singspiel is a milestone in Hungarian music history: its composer, Zoltán Kodály, fulfilled his aspiration to elevate Hungarian folk song of ancient origin to the same status as classical music, by virtue of its equivalent values, placing it on the stage of the nation’s Opera House.
