A Tóték az emberi jellem eltorzulásának kis panoptikuma, egyik alapkérdése pedig, hogy miért hódol be az épeszű ember szolgálatkészen a hatalomra jutott őrülteknek újra meg újra. Tótékhoz megérkezik a fronton szolgáló fiuk felettese, hogy az erdőkkel körülvett mátraszentannai házukban kipihenje a háború szörnyűségeit. A család mindent megtesz, hogy az őrnagy jól érezze magát, azonban ez nem olyan könnyű feladat, mint amennyire elsőre tűnik.
A Csíki Játékszín Örkény István születésének századik évfordulója alkalmából mutatta be a Tóték című tragikomédiát, a Színház Világnapján Victor Ioan Frunză rendezésében.

While the Fountain of Tears bubbles before him, Giray, khan of the Tatars, is lost in brooding. Just as the flow from the marble fount cannot be exhausted, his own sorrow will never diminish, either. The story of the Fountain of Bakhchisarai is set in motion by a romance recounting the reason for the khan's gloom.
