A Magyar Állami Operaház működésének míves hagyománya, hogy a mindenszentek–halottak napja ünnepkörben műsorra tűzi azt a gyászmisét, amelyet sokan egyenesen „gyászoperaként" tartanak nyilván. Giuseppe Verdi nagyszabású Requiemje egy operakomponista őszinte színpadi muzsikája, amelyben tragédia, fájdalom, remény és vigasztalás színei keverednek – operai stílusban, Verdi-nyelvezettel fogalmazva a szívszorítóan intim pillanatoktól a döbbenetes tablókig.
