Molière társulata a Palais Royal-ban lép fel, XIV. Lajos előtt. A király tapsol, Molière verset rögtönözve köszöni meg a királyi kegyet. A társulat sikere és Molière elismertsége a csúcson van. A Tartuffe bemutatója azonban sokak ellenszenvét kivívja, akik a komédia gyilkos humorától megsebzetten lihegnek bosszút Őfelsége komédiása ellen.
