Réges-régen élt egy férfi Keleten, három fia volt, akiket egyformán szeretett. Amikor közeledett a halála, sokat töprengett azon, hogy őseitől örökölt bűvös erejű gyűrűjét melyikükre hagyja. Ezt a gyűrűt tulajdonosa soha nem húzta le az ujjáról, így isten és ember egyaránt kedvelte. Az apák mindig legkedvesebb fiaikra hagyták, így szállt nemzedékről nemzedékre. Ez a keleti férfi végül úgy döntött, hogy egyik fiának sem kedvez a másik kettő rovására. Titokban csináltatott két teljesen hasonlót, még ő sem tudta megkülönböztetni őket. Magához hívta fiait a halálos ágyához, titokban mindegyiknek átadott egy gyűrűt, majd meghalt. Halála után mindhárom fiú azt hitte, hogy övé a bűvös erejű gyűrű, és mindhárom a ház ura akart lenni.
