Idén lesz 180 éve, hogy megszületett Claude Monet (1840-1926), aki festőtársaival (Renoir, Cézanne, Degas) egy teljesen új festészetet képviselt a megszokott akadémikus stílusokhoz képest. Képeiket sokáig fogadták idegenkedve gyakran kabarétréfák tárgyai voltak. Monet és az impresszionisták azonban kitartóan készítették gyorsan megfestett és a pillanat megragadására törekvő képeiket. Mozgalmuk hatása a mai napig tart, hiszen ők alapozták meg a 20. századi modern művészetet.
