Neil Simon világhírű drámaíró szerint az élet szomorú is, meg mulatságos is. Nem tud olyan komikus helyzetet elképzelni, amely nem fájdalmas is egyúttal; ebben a látszólag felhőtlenül kedves és humoros darabba is csöppentett egy pici szomorúságot: ilyen törékeny még egy friss házasság is?
Az újdonsült feleség életét az örömök hajszolásának szenteli. Ahogy a mézeshetek extázisa átadja helyét az otthonteremtés valóságának egy ötemeletes, lift nélküli házban, a házasság harmóniája komikus civódásba fordul. Az anyós panaszkodik. A feljebb lakó középkorú nőcsábász flörtöl. Az örömből kín lesz. Corie össze akarja boronálni magányos mamáját a vagány, öregedő szomszéddal, e célból egy görbe estét töltenek négyesben egy különleges vendéglőben. A fiatal feleség terve csak félig sikerül: a mama a szomszédnál tölti az éjszakát, a fiatal házasok azonban összevesznek…
