Huszka Jenő operettjének címszereplője valós személy volt. A történet 1848-ban Bécsben kezdődik. Simonich Máriát rokonai a lány tiltakozása ellenére egy osztrák arisztokratához készülnek férjhez adni. Mária a forradalom hevében égő Magyarországra szökik, és nemzetőr-egyenruhát ölt. 1849-ben is férfiként, Lebstück Károly néven szolgál a seregben. Főhadnagyságig viszi, miközben eléri a végzet: a szerelem. Beleszeret a szigorú Jancsó hadnagyba, aki többször is megrója vak
