Teszi ezt méghozzá az alapjában azért tiszta szívű vagányok és a szerelmes kis cselédek veszedelmesen olcsó sablonromantikájával. És a Liliom mégiscsak klasszikus. Miért? Mitől? Talán azért, mert a darab túlszínezettsége mégiscsak (vagy éppenséggel) kiveti a kor jellemző érzelmi sémáját: a jóra tehetetlen jóságot, a durvasággá torzuló szeretetet. És talán azért is klasszikus a Liliom, mert, ami átüt az olcsón színes képeken, az mégiscsak a való égi mása. Valódi benne a szerelem és a halál, mint rossz limonádéban a jó rum.
