Maureen is a rather plain spinster in her forties who lives with her mother, Mag and takes care of her. The hypochondriac old woman makes life a burden to her daughter but Maureen is also moved by her viciousness.

The life of the two women is filled with watching television and never-ending and devastating altercations when they get an invitation to Pato Dooley’s party. Maureen puts nice dress on, and tries to have fun once in her life. So much so, that she spends the whole night with Pato.
Next morning Maureen and the jealous mother quarrelling before Pato’s eyes, but that don’t discourage the man. He writes a letter to Maureen saying that he is in love with her and that he wants to take Maureen to Boston. However, the letter can’t reach the addressee: Mag opens it then burn it away. Although Maureen finds everything out, but it is too late…
Martin McDonagh wrote his first play, The Beauty Queen of Leenane in 1996, in eight days, reportedly on the basis of the book entitled “How to write?”.

The Beauty Queen of Leenane was premiered by the Druid Theatre Company/Royal Court Theatre in Galway Ireland in Town Hall Theatre 1 February 1996. That was followed by the London premiere (in Royal Court Theatre Upstairs) on 5th March, 1996. Overseas it was presented 11 February, 1998 by the Atlantic Theater Company, New York. After that it went to the Broadway where was presented by the Atlantic Theater Company, with the contribution of Randall L. Wreghitt, Chase Mishkin, Steven M. Levy and Leonard Soloway, in cooperation with Julian Schlossberg and Norma Langworthy.
The play was produced in Hungary with the mediation of THEATRUM MUNDI Theatrical and Literary Agency.
