A bibliai tíz csapást idézi meg Rossini lenyűgöző Mózese. Sötétség borul Egyiptom földjére, a Fáraó és népe rettegve fordul a Prófétához, hogy ő hárítsa el fejükről az Örökkévaló haragját.
Így kezdődik a nagy olasz komponista művének első, 1818-ban keletkezett, nápolyi változata. A zárókép pedig az operairodalom egyik remeke: Mózes és a zsidó nép imája, a Vörös Tenger kettéválása, majd a szörnyű vihar, amely a hullámsírba temeti az üldöző egyiptomiakat. A lecsendesült tenger békéjét festi a zenekari epilógus, a hazatalálás lírai hangjaival zárul a rendkívüli mű.
Ez a három felvonásos nápolyi változat a Zsidó Nyári Fesztiválon hangzik föl Magyarországon először, a csodálatos Dohány utcai zsinagógában, ismert hazai és két izraeli vendégénekes közreműködésével.
