Az 1930-as évek elején, a nagy gazdasági válság idején vándormunkások járják az országot. Az értelmes George és bivalyerős, ám szellemileg visszamaradott társa, Lennie is munkát keresve sodródik tanyáról tanyára. George saját tanyáról álmodik, ahol nyulat is tenyésztenek, amit Lennie annyira imád. Sikerül munkát kapniuk a Tyler farmon. A többi munkás hamarosan kipécézi magának Lennie-t. Különösen Curley, a főnök fia jár élen a piszkálódásban. A férfi csinos és kikapós felesége azonban kedves a mamlasz férfival. George hiába figyelmezteti, hogy maradjon távol a nőtől.
