Erdőlánya tündér titokban felneveli Bergengócia királyának kisfiát és kislányát, akiket az ármányos banya tett ki az erdőre.
Amikor eljön az ideje, az Aranytollú madár visszaviszi a gyerekeket a szüleik közelébe a selyemrétre, ahol palotát emel nekik. A banya megsejti, hogy kik a gyerekek, ezért próbatételeket eszel ki, hogy elveszejtse őket. Aranytollú azonban segít, így a végén a szülők és a gyerekek egymásra találnak.
