A világ tökéletes. Épp ezért érthetetlen, hogy mit tökéletlenkedünk benne mi, emberek. Hogyan gondolhatta az Úr, hogy mi leszünk a teremtés koronája? Vagy Ő ezt nem így képzelte? Egyszerűen csak kicsúszott a kezéből az irányítás? Lehet, hogy a sátánnak nagyobb hatalma van, mint ahogy hisszük? Vagy tán a sátán kezében sincs már hatalom? Akkor viszont ki irányít? Volt az Úr, volt a sátán, voltak az angyalok, majd lett a férfi, és… és amikor megjelent a nő, minden egyszeriben megváltozott…

A century ago, the world first encountered this remarkable opus, a work that soon became one of the cornerstones of twentieth-century musical innovation. Premiered in 1926, the singspiel is a milestone in Hungarian music history: its composer, Zoltán Kodály, fulfilled his aspiration to elevate Hungarian folk song of ancient origin to the same status as classical music, by virtue of its equivalent values, placing it on the stage of the nation’s Opera House.
