A falu rosszában Feledi Gáspárnak, a falu bírájának nevelt leányába, Bátki Tercsibe szerelmes lesz egy szegény szolgalegény, Göndör Sándor. Csakhogy Tercsi ekkor már Lajosnak, Feledi fiának a jegyese, Sándor tehát a bánatnak adja fejét, elkeseredésében kocsmázni kezd, "falurosszává?" züllik.
