This two-act opera by Jenő Hubay (1858-1937), a composer with a highly varied oeuvre, was premiered at the Hungarian Royal Opera House on 10 November 1894. After proving popular, the piece set off to conquer the world, winning over viewers from Russia to America. Set in the Italian city of Cremona in the 1750s, the work tells the story of a competition announced by the instrument-maker Ferrari: whoever crafts the finest violin will win his daughter's hand in marriage. Two lads yearn for the beautiful girl, and after a few complications are settled, she is naturally united with the one she loves.
