Charles, a regényíró új regényéhez tapasztalatgyűjtés gyanánt egy médiumot invitál házukba, hogy egy spirituális szeánszon vegyenek részt feleségével, Ruthtal és néhány barátjukkal. A nem várt fordulat: sikeresnek bizonyul a szellemidézés, megjelenik Charles elhunyt felesége, Elvira, akit csak Charles és a közönség érzékel.
